Help Make 'Sump-Thing'
Better Happen In 2008!
Please help make a difference and support the community nature preserve by becoming a member of the Garden City Bird Sanctuary for 2008. Our goal is to increase family membership to 350 families for the next year, so that we have the necessary funds to continue to provide the community service and environmental stewardship activities that have earned the Garden City Bird Sanctuary a growing reputation on Long Island. We've been open both Saturdays and Sundays, and have increasing visitors each year.
We continue to make progress, and replanted an entire section of trees and shrubs by the Hempstead Plains meadow, thanks to community donations and a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Community Tree Planting program. Boy scouts built a new gazebo, trellises and completed a small pond. Schools conducted volunteer days, and we had a Earth Fest and parrot show as well as a birds of prey and wildlife rescue demonstration by NYC Fireman Bobby Horvath where we released a pair of kestrels. The Halloween Festival and Haunted Hike was a delight, and several new memorial trees have been planted. We've also been working extremely hard to obtain funding through the 2006 Nassau County Environmental Programs Bond for significant capital improvements and thank the 600 folks that signed the group letter of support.
